Other Causes of Reactive Hypoglycemia
The 2002 Conference of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists is called The Insulin Resistance (Dysmetabolic) Syndrome Conference and this is its Statement of Purpose:
- To recognize that the Insulin Resistance (Dysmetabolic) Syndrome is an epidemic affecting 1 in 4 Americans, is rising in incidence, and underlies much of the illnesses from obesity and sedentary lifestyle such as heart disease and diabetes;
- call to action by endocrinologists for the public and for fellow clinicians to recognize and treat this disorder;
- define the Insulin Resistance (Dysmetabolic) Syndrome;
- explore the pathophysiology of the Insulin Resistance (Dysmetabolic) Syndrome;
- differentiate between the Insulin Resistance (Dysmetabolic) Syndrome and Type 2 Diabetes;
- define the disease-related consequences of the Insulin Resistance (Dysmetabolic) Syndrome;
- identify individuals at risk for the Insulin Resistance (Dysmetabolic) Syndrome;
- review obesity and its relationship to the Insulin Resistance (Dysmetabolic) Syndrome;
- develop criteria for predicting the Insulin Resistance (Dysmetabolic) Syndrome;
- explore the clinical utility of recognizing the Insulin Resistance (Dysmetabolic) Syndrome;
- evaluate the treatment of the Insulin Resistance (Dysmetabolic) Syndrome.
If the insulin resistance problem is big enough and serious enough to command the attention of a full conference of endocrinologists, it is obvious that we need to take it seriously, too.
