Other Causes of Reactive Hypoglycemia
Pancreatic Tumours
If you have growths on your pancreas, they effectively enlarge your pancreas and increase the amount of insulin produced. This may also mean that insulin is produced continuously, not just in response to your intake, so that when you haven't eaten in several hours and there is no food left in your system for the insulin to work on, your blood sugar will drop below comfortable levels.
The cure is surgery to remove the growths from your pancreas. Your insulin production will go back to normal, and you should see your symptoms reduced or eliminated.
Large Cancers
Large cancers (non-beta cell tumours) can also cause fasting hypoglycemia. Sometimes large tumours produce an insulin-like substance that can lower your blood sugar. As with organ failure, you will be sick before you notice the hypoglycemia. In this case, removal of the cancer will also cure your hypoglycemia.
Other Excess Insulin Conditions
Other excess-insulin states that can cause hypoglycemia are genetic problems. One example is people whose bodies make antibodies that prevent insulin from being broken down. In this case the insulin works normally, but it lasts too long and drives the blood sugar down too far. And some peoples' bodies produce an antibody to the insulin receptor, which results in incorrect response to the insulin produced.
Organ failure
Failure of the liver, the kidney or the heart can also cause fasting hypoglycemia as can sepsis (severe infection). If one of your organs is failing, hypoglycemia definitely won't be your first indication-you will already be sick. You don't need to worry about undiagnosed organ failure!
You must see your doctor and follow her instructions and guidelines-improvement of organ function should also improve the hypoglycemia problem.
