Who is Anita Flegg?

Like you, I suffer from Hypoglycemia and I’m learning as much as I can about it. I really want to feel better and I know it’s possible because it’s working.

Back a bit. I’m an Electrical Engineer, and I worked in the High Technology Sector for almost 18 years. When I was laid off in 1999, I was a mess. I was burned out, chronically tired and not sleeping. So, with some extra time on my hands, I started on a self-help kick. I decided that I want to live to be 100 (at least!), so I set about figuring out how to do that.

I’m very uncoordinated and definitely not an athlete, but I knew I had to start exercising regularly. The first thing I did was to start walking every day. The next thing was to sign up at a local fitness club to start a weight program. This was going well (although I find weight lifting very boring!), and I was getting stronger and my energy level was improving.

But I also wanted to lose weight. No matter how strong I got, my weight was stuck at 175 lbs. I knew that one of my problems was sweets but I was having so much trouble curbing my cravings. One cookie turned into 6 or 8 and one small piece of chocolate turned into a couple of handfuls of chocolate chips.

I tried dieting, but I was hungry and miserable all the time. I knew that I was more comfortable if I ate frequently, and that seemed to be one of the problems I had losing weight. I seemed to be eating constantly.

I had heard the word "Hypoglycemia" before, so I decided to try to find out more. I had lots of questions:

  • Do I have hypoglycemia?
  • How did I "get" it?

And most importantly,

  • What can I do about it?!

I began my research.

I compared my symptoms with those listed on hypoglycemia web sites, and I came to the conclusion that, Yes, I do have hypoglycemia. But now what?

The first piece of advice that almost everyone seemed to agree on was NO SUGAR!

Imagine my shock and dismay when I read that. The sugar addict has to give up sugar? No WAY!

Well, after a week without sugar, I realized I would need help. With that in mind I booked a visit with a nutritionist that a hypoglycemic friend of mine recommended. (Once I started talking to people, I found that many people I knew were hypoglycemic or know someone that is!) He confirmed that sugar had to go, but added caffeine to the list.

I love sugar, but caffeine is Sacred! Come on now—you can’t be serious. I can’t live without Diet Coke!

I stayed off the sugar from that point on, but it took another 4 months before I was able to completely kick the caffeine habit. I stopped eating sugar in May of 2002, and I feel better than I ever have before. I have more energy than I know what to do with, I have started sleeping and BONUS — I’ve lost more than 25 pounds.

I was so happy about all of this, I had to share it. That’s why I started writing my book — Hypoglycemia: The Other Sugar Disease . So many others also found it useful that I have been able to release a second edition, too. Who would have guessed that so many people are suffering? So many people had questions about how to change their diet, I had my friend, Cathy help me add a workbook to the 2nd edition. (Cathy is also my business partner. In addition to my hypoglycemia work, I am a writer and editor. Cathy is a trainer, and our business is The Sharp Quill.)

So I hope you enjoy what you see and what you learn, and I wish you much health and happiness.

Anita
